提起竹子，很多人的第一反应是“熊猫最爱的食物”。但是在中国文化中，竹子有着更深的意义。竹子四季常青，不怕寒冷，象征着坚强和不屈；它中空，代表虚心；它笔直，代表“宁折不弯”的君子品格。所以，古人常说：“宁可食无肉，不可居无竹”，意思是：宁愿饭里没有肉，也不能生活在没有竹子的地方。

宋代有一位非常喜欢竹子的画家，叫文同。他每天都画竹子，不管风吹雨打，从不停止。久而久之，他在动笔之前，脑中竹子的形象就已经清清楚楚了。朋友看他下笔自信，就称赞说他“胸有成竹”。现在，我们用这个词来形容一个人准备得很充分，做事很有把握。

在纸发明之前，人们把竹子削平，做成竹简，在上面写字。“罄竹难书”这个成语就和竹简有关。隋朝末年，起义军的领袖号召大家反对当时的皇帝，列出他的许多罪行，并说：“把山上的竹子全砍下来做成竹简，也写不完他的罪状。”后来，“罄竹难书”就用来形容一个人做了太多坏事，多到写都写不完。
